About
I’m Nathaniel Dean. My friends call me Deano. I’m a recent graduate of UC Berkeley and a young entrepreneur. You can learn more about me here.
The reasons I blog:
Success is non-linear: What I mean by this is that its easy to look at where you want to be and backtrack (I want to get to D, so I’ll go from A to B to C… ). But often general value adding actions lead to unexpected, though very positive, results.
The last time I started a blog, it was circa 2005 and I was working on Capital Hill. Though I only amassed a relatively small readership, it lead, unexpectedly, to meeting new friends and forming in-person relationships that I cherish today. I hope that this one leads to more unexpected good things.
Writing is good for you: The difference between doing something and thinking about something is the difference between need and want. I feel writing is a great skill that I don’t do enough of, but I know that I won’t do it unless I have to. I also believe it leads to me being more articulate and informed about things if I write about them.
TipsDown:
The name ‘Tips Down’ comes from an old skiing story: With everyone watching from the bottom, a guy jumps into a steep chute, narrowly passes the rocks in his path, barrels to the bottom at high speed. Later on at the end of the day, the guy’s at the lodge and gets asked “Man, that was incredible. How do you do it?” He replies, “Well, when I’m standing at the top of the mountain, I point my ski tips down.”
Massive action - nothing else - creates incredible results.
